Morghul

Morghul was a young dragon of House Targaryen hatched in the Dragonpit at King’s Landing during the early 120s AC. He was bonded to Princess Jaehaera Targaryen, daughter of King Aegon II Targaryen and Queen Helaena Targaryen. As a cradle dragon, Morghul shared the early life of his rider, though he remained small and untested throughout his existence. At the time of the Dance of the Dragons, Morghul had not reached a size suitable for riding in battle and was confined within the Dragonpit along with several other young dragons.

Morghul was described as a pale dragon, though detailed accounts of his coloration and physical characteristics are limited due to his short life and lack of battlefield exposure. Unlike older dragons such as Vhagar or Caraxes, Morghul had no opportunity to develop combat experience or establish a reputation in war. His existence represents the later generation of Targaryen dragons raised in captivity within the Dragonpit, rather than in the open volcanic environment of Dragonstone.

During the Dance of the Dragons, Morghul remained within the Dragonpit and was never deployed in combat. His rider, Jaehaera Targaryen, was a child throughout the conflict and did not take part in military actions. As a result, Morghul’s role in the war was limited entirely to his presence among the dragons housed in King’s Landing, many of which would meet their end during the uprising of the smallfolk.

Morghul’s death came during the Storming of the Dragonpit in 130 AC, one of the most destructive and chaotic events of the war. As mobs of smallfolk overwhelmed the Dragonpit, multiple dragons were attacked and killed in confined conditions. Morghul, still young and unable to escape effectively, was slain during the assault. Accounts suggest he was killed by attackers within the pit, likely through a combination of weapons and the structural collapse that followed the fighting.

Morghul’s death illustrates the vulnerability of younger dragons raised in captivity, particularly when denied the space and freedom to grow to full strength. Unlike the great dragons that fell in open battle, Morghul died without ever taking flight in war, a casualty not of combat strategy but of civil unrest and the collapse of royal authority in King’s Landing.

Morghul is remembered as one of the youngest dragons to die during the Dance of the Dragons and as part of the generation whose destruction marked the beginning of the end for Targaryen dragonkind in Westeros. His brief life and confined existence stand in contrast to the earlier dragons of Valyria and the Conquest, reflecting the gradual decline of dragon power leading into the later history of the realm.
