The Last Dragon

The Last Dragon was the final known living dragon of House Targaryen, hatched during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen, known as the Dragonbane. By the time of its birth, the great age of dragons had already ended, following the widespread destruction of dragonkind during the Dance of the Dragons. Unlike the powerful dragons of earlier generations, the Last Dragon was small, weak, and deformed, marking a stark contrast to the creatures that had once dominated the skies of Westeros.

Accounts describe the Last Dragon as stunted in growth, never reaching a size capable of flight or combat. Its wings were undersized, and it lacked the strength and vitality typical of earlier dragons. Despite efforts made during Aegon III’s reign to restore the dragon population, including attempts to hatch additional eggs, none succeeded in producing healthy dragons. The Last Dragon thus represents the final failure of these efforts and the end of the Targaryen dragonline in Westeros.

The creature lived a short and uneventful life, confined and closely observed as the last remnant of a once-dominant species. It died during the same reign in which it was born, bringing an end to the era of dragons that had begun with the rise of Valyria and continued through Aegon’s Conquest.
