The Black Dread
Balerion Wasn't even Close to Valyria's Greatest Dragon — Ten Stood Above Him
12 min · Published 14 August 2026 · Watch on YouTube ↗
When Balerion the Black Dread died, the maesters measured his skull and called him the largest dragon ever recorded — seven hundred and twenty-two feet from wingtip to wingtip. But run their own numbers, and the arithmetic collapses. The Black Dread was four years old when Valyria burned. Four. A hatchling small enough to carry in a cart, while the greatest empire the world has ever known came apart around him. The same histories also swear Balerion flew out of Valyria twelve years before the Doom — a dragon who escaped eight years before he hatched. Both claims sit in the record. Both cannot be true. Buried in that broken arithmetic is a story Westeros never told. Whichever count you keep…
